We’re all a work in progress…

A recent workshop has got me in reflective mood. I discussed with delegates how every day is another chance to become a better version of ourselves.

I explained how, every day, I am trying to become a better communication trainer and how there is no such thing as perfect in anything we do.

The person you are today is not the person you’ll be a year from now. That’s not a sign that you’re lacking; it’s a sign that you’re growing.

One of the biggest barriers to growth is believing we should already have everything sorted out. We compare our behind-the-scenes struggles with someone else’s highlights and conclude that we’re falling behind. We often put others on a metaphorical pedestal and yet everyone is wrestling with their own fears, doubts, mistakes and unanswered questions.

None of us has finished developing.

This realisation can be incredibly freeing. It means you don’t have to be perfect before you try something new. You don’t have to have all the answers before taking the next step. You don’t have to be defined by your worst day, your biggest mistake or a chapter of your life that no longer reflects who you are.

Development isn’t about becoming someone entirely different. It’s about becoming more fully yourself – learning what matters, letting go of what doesn’t and choosing, day by day, to keep growing.

So be patient with – and kind to – yourself.

Celebrate your progress instead of perfection. Embrace your mistakes as teachers rather than verdicts and extend goodwill to others; remembering that they’re charting their own journey too.

We are all works in progress. We are shaped by our experiences, strengthened by our struggles and always capable of becoming a better version of ourselves than we were yesterday.
